Description

Born during the Edo period in the forests of the Tohoku region, Japanese Kokeshi dolls have been preserved through time and represent a special and extraordinary folk toy. Each doll is different and special because they are all handmade from wood and even if the designs are the same – a simple trunk with no arms or legs and a rounded head – each one is slightly different, which is enjoyable for the fans and makes them so collectable. The body often has floral or ring designs painted and covered with a layer of wax. According to the legend, Kokeshi symbolize life and are offered as a proof of friendship or they are simply interior ornament with a deepeer meaning of protection for children. Their uniqueness and history have inspired this project. Miss Sake, the kokeshi sake bottle – tokkuri – and its sake cup – sakazuki – made of porcelain and manufactured in Arita (Japan) during a personal Art Residency experience.

As limited numbered edition, each one keeps its own Japanese name and meaning, bringing on the table their special presence…please don’t call her Geisha.

Made in Arita – Japan in 2018, during my Art Residency in Kouraku Kiln (Kyushu)
