Ready made of a traditional Chochin, a Japanese paper lantern, turned into a beautiful ceramic vase.

Description

This project takes inspiration from Japanese craft culture and teachings, in particular it is the ceramic ready-made of the Chochin paper lanterns, traditional form of illumination in Japan. Originally used to shine light at people’s feet in dark streets at night, they are made from washi paper carefully glued on a bamboo cane frame, lit at festivals and also hung outside restaurants and inns. Nowadays, Japanese paper lanterns are used in many ways and in many places: families hang them outside of their homes during special times of the year because it is believed that they welcome home the spirits of each family’s ancestors. This is the main concept behind the project, beautifully re-made as container for flowers out of white earthenware. The shape is slip casted and available in two different versions: plain white using glossy transparent glaze, or black and white using pale tranparent glaze with decals on two sides, to represent a vintage look and old fashioned appeal, to remind the spirit of respect for things, part of Japanese culture.
