Following the inspiration of Black Lives Matter, the social movement whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities, this project wants to explore black clay to stop my personal concentration on using white clay in making. By combating and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black imagination and innovation, participants in the movement have demonstrated against the deaths of numerous other African Americans by police actions or while in police custody. In 2020 following the killing of George Floyd an estimated 15 to 26 million people participated in the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests in the United States, I desired so much to be there with them, by their side. “Our fight for liberty, justice, and freedom continues. Together, we can — and will — transform. This is the revolution. Change is coming.” I embrace those words giving life to this collection inspired by African Women, their pure beauty, their particular hairstyle, listening to Nina Simone’s music and lyrics as visual and emotional guide. Each Money box is unique, made out of unglazed black clay, to enhance the material and its warm surface.
As Martin Luther King famously said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
