Description

When excavations began at the ancient Roman city of Pompei in the 18th century, the place turned out to be full of penises. The ancient art preserved under ash from the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius was so rich in willies that archeologists argued for the existence of an ancient fertility cult there. In ancient Roman religion and magic, in fact, the fascinus or fascinum was the embodiment of the divine phallus; the word can refer to phallus effigies or amulets, and to the spells used to invoke his divine protection. From the desire to keep that traditional production, this project retraces the iconic shape in a contemporary way, inspired by the beauty and originality that Stanley Kubrick brings to his films, especially his artistic set designs. Case in point is the retro yet sexual theme he favored in A Clockwork Orange, selecting and highlighting the kinetic phallic sculpture Rocking Machine by Hermann Makkink (1969) out of fiberglass, but here scaled as miniature and re-made out of white earthenware, as unique design choice.
